With his usual impatience and purpose, Arthur stormed into the physician's quarters. He was unable to find Merlin, and he wasn't taking the time to even check before he started loudly talking. ❝Merlin, when I actually need your physician skills you're nowhere to be found! I shouldn't have to track you down, I - Oh.❞ Arthur stopped in his tracks.

He was a bit embarrassed at his behavior. He knew that Merlin could take a good fussing at. He didn't want to do that to the new apprentice. ❝Kiara, is it? Am I interrupting any important studies? I have a very minor cut - it just needs bandaged up.❞ Not only was Arthur just giving Merlin hell, but he didn't want to seem like this was his normal reaction to an injury.

soft!merthur obsessed with each other and being completely, glaringly obvious about it. walking close enough for their fingers to be constantly brushing, talking with their other hand and refusing to break the touch. standing next to each other in a group, slowly shifting closer and closer until they’re pressed up against each other. despite there being other people, whenever they speak the other just has to respond leading them to turn to one another and have their own back and forth, their heads tilting closer and closer until their noses are just inches apart. merlin pretending to find issues with arthur’s clothes to fix that aren’t actually there just to touch him but arthur’s not gonna comment on that bc it means he gets to feel merlin’s touch. gazing at each other across the room, across the training field, across camp, etc and just watching them exist with the softest gaze and a small, tender smile. when the other feels their gaze they look up at them first and meet their eyes unflinchingly. them staring at each other for a moment before they resume what they should be doing (albeit slightly flustered). arthur finding any excuse to keep merlin in his chambers just a little while longer when he should be retiring for bed

Arthur's brow furrowed as he processed the implications of the revelation. The idea of relying on sorcery was still a bitter pill to swallow, but the evidence was undeniable. He studied the man before him, the faint amusement in his eyes, and the subtle movement of his lips. There was more to this than mere survival. ❝Your Court Sorcerer and Physician must be quite remarkable.❞ Arthur conceded, a hint of grudging respect in his tone.

The strategy Arthur had proposed was not without its risks, but it might be the only way to ensure a win. Morgause was a threat that could not be underestimated, and any advantage, no matter how uncomfortable, had to be considered.

❝I understand your reluctance. Trust me.❞ Arthur said, meeting the other's gaze steadily. ❝But we cannot afford to rush into this without careful planning. Morgause is cunning and ruthless; we must be prepared for whatever she throws our way.❞ He paused, his expression softening slightly, Arthur's lips twitched in a faint smile of his own. ❝And if you can persuade them to join our cause, I'll do what I can on my end to ensure they see the benefit of working together.❞

"Of course," he replied, faintly amused at Arthur's obvious surprise, and his lips twitched upwards ever so slightly. "How else do you think I survived Morgause's attack? I would not be standing here before you if it was not for his, and my Court Physician's, excellent knowledge of healing spells," he easily admitted.

He chewed on the inside of his lip as he considered Arthur's suggestion; despite his displeasure of allowing Morgause to freely rove around the kingdoms for any longer than truly necessary, he could see the wisdom in that strategy.

"Yes," he rather unwillingly agreed. "That will provide me with sufficient time to gather the sorcerers...and see if any can be persuaded to work with you," there was another faint twitch of his lips.

Nearly everything about this ball thus far had gone exactly as Arthur had anticipated it would. Nearly. There was one particular aspect of it though, that actually managed to take him by surprise, and that was through what had began as a rather innocuous observation; a young woman who was standing off to the side, much the same as he himself was, and seemingly watching more than participating, again, rather like himself. Try as he might to put it out of his mind, Arthur couldn't stop his eyes from wandering in her direction again and again. This was, admittedly, in part because she was very pleasing to look upon, the sort of girl who undoubtedly would make him blush in closer proximity, but it was also because the sight of her stirred in him a sense of curiosity.

He must have stood in uncertainty and self-debate for the whole of an age, before, with a deep breath, he made his way across the room and approached, clearing his throat as he did so. "I...I do beg your pardon for the intrusion..." He began, and sure enough, he could already feel his cheeks beginning to heat up. "But I...I could not help but observe you playing the role of the observer tonight, and I...I suppose I simply wondered why that might be?" He knew he might be pushing the bounds of what was acceptable to ask, and yet he couldn't help it; his curiosity, and dare I say, fascination had been piqued and would not allow him to pretend it did not exist.
